In television, Towne has had recurring roles in several series. She played Riley Veatch in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and appeared in multiple episodes of "Tell Me You Love Me" on HBO. She also had a notable role in the short-lived but critically acclaimed series "Mulholland Drive" (1999), which was later developed into David Lynch's surrealist film of the same name.

Katherine was married to fellow actor Charlie Hunnam from 1999 to 2002. They married when he was 18 and she was 20 while on a trip to Las Vegas. They had only known each other for three weeks. They met at a Dawson's Creek audition. Years later Charlie would describe their marriage as "three terrible, painful, expensive years. I got the cats at the end of it, so that was good. There was a small victory."

He bought this home in 1987 for $2.5 million and sold it in 2015 for $9.65 million. In 2021 this home sold for $22 million. Katharine lived in a home in Studio City for several years. She sold the property in 2022 for around $2.5 million.
